Phones was a rather swell map, hence the shoutout to Stephen on the cover. OK, less cryptic this paragraph. Phones was a member of the '70s art punkers Swell Maps. Stephen is Stephen Bird, aka Jowe Head, also a Map. Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtracks, sadly both no longer with us, were also Maps. As far as I know, this was Phones' only solo release, though his website (that I just now discovered, while writing this) indicates there's other, old recorded stuff in the can. Plus, there are some new songs on his MySpace that sound pretty darn cool; I vote they get formally released. I CAN VOTE IF I WANT! IT'S MY BLOG!! Today's song is from the b-side of the EP pictured above and is a rather raucous Slade cover. Obviously, the question now is, "Where is Golden Cockrill's solo record?" |
