Tim Buckley
 "Sing a Song for You"

Tim Buckley
Once I Was
CD
(Strange Fruit, 1999)

Well, hello and welcome to my jukebox! My goal is to have a new song up every day around 9 a.m., Eastern time. We'll see how well that works.

^_^

So, for my first selection, I decided to go with something "song"-related, and this was the first thing that popped into my lil' noggin'.

This was the first song I ever heard by Tim Buckley that made a dent in my skull. I'd tried listening to Starsailor a few years earlier, and just couldn't dig it, man. Now, of course, I love love love it. So, my friend James put the studio version of this song on a mix tape nearly 20 years ago and it slowly but steadily crept into my head and built a nest. I started looking for the source album and eventually came across Happy Sad, snapped that puppy up, and had a new musical hero.

Since I want to present primarily stuff a bit more off the beaten path, I've chosen the recording he did for the John Peel show on BBC1 on April 2, 1968. He's in a very stripped down trio format here: himself on vocals and 12 string acoustic guitar, Lee Underwood on guitar and Carter CC Collins on bongos.

Sadly, though Tim released nine albums during his lifetime, his reputation has been overshadowed by his son, Jeff, who released but one.

If I never hear Jeff (or anyone else) sing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" again, it will be too soon.
